ATA is working to influence federal policy to help reduce the price of diesel fuel. ATA has testified before both the House of Representative and the Senate on the impacts that high fuel prices are having on the trucking industry. ATA has succeeded in persuading the federal government to stop filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and is working to enact legislation to expand production of domestically-produced petroleum from resources that have been declared off limits for environmental reasons (e.g., the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve, the Outer Continental Shelf, and oil shale located in Colorado, Wyoming and Utah).
ATA also seeks to enact policies to reduce the industry’s consumption of diesel fuel by enacting incentives to promote idling reduction technologies, reducing the speed of all motor vehicles, expanding the use of higher-productivity vehicles, improving fuel economy, and reducing congestion. On June 19, 2008, ATA held a workshop to teach motor carriers how to reduce their fuel consumption and to discuss advanced fuel purchasing strategies. A DVD of this informative workshop will soon be available for purchase.
