Wetlines refer to the product piping underneath cargo tank trucks that transport gasoline and other flammable liquids. ATA opposes a legislative mandate for the installation of costly equipment to purge residual product from wetlines. The trucking industry’s safety record demonstrates that a mandate to install wetlines-purging equipment is not justified. DOT’s hazmat incident database confirms that there has not been a single wetlines incident that has resulted in a fatality or injury in more than 6 years. By contrast, between 50,000 and 100,000 cargo tank shipments of flammable liquids occur each day.
