On February 1, 2011, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) issued a proposed rule to mandate the installation and use of electronic logging devices for hours of service compliance by all drivers who are currently required to keep paper logs. Compliance would be required three years after the date the rule is eventually finalized. The proposed rule also addresses ATA’s long standing objection that the agency needs to better specify the number, type and frequency of supporting documents for hours of service compliance that must be maintained.
