Electronic Collection of the HVUT
Last year, the Internal Revenue Service began enforcing the new requirement that taxpayers filing and paying the federal heavy vehicle use tax (reported on IRS Form 2290) must file electronically if they are reporting and paying the tax on 25 or more vehicles at once. All such filings must be made through software certified by IRS, which does not itself provide such software. A number of third parties will make such filings for carriers – for a fee. IRS has not yet determined what penalties will apply to those who file Form 2290 manually for larger fleets. The Service has, however, issued guidance to taxpayers. To see it, click here.
