Federal Tax Credits for Safety Equipment
In April 2009, a bill (H.R. 2024) was introduced in Congress that would grant federal tax credits to owners of commercial motor vehicles who install certain advanced safety equipment on them: a brake-stroke monitoring system, lane-departure warning system, collision warning system, vehicle stability system, or another system which may be certified by the U.S. Department of Transportation as significantly enhancing the safety or security of various aspects of the vehicles’ operation. While there are limits to the credits offered, the approach may provide a useful alternative to a federal mandate for carriers to install these devices. ATA was involved in drafting this legislation, urged its introduction, and is working for its enactment. Click here for the text of H.R. 2024 as introduced.
