Electronic Data Interchange Business Flow Chart
Developed and produced by the Voluntary Inter-Industry Commerce Standards Transportation & Distribution Committee with the support of ATA members.
Electronic data interchange is the inter-company, computer-to-computer communication of data, which replaces standard business documents. EDI provides a standard data format for securely transmitting messages electronically between trading partners.
Motor carriers, shippers and consignees work along with ATA's Information Technology and Logistics Council to recommend and develop standards for their industry. ITLC participates in regular meetings of the American National Standards Institute Accredited Standards Committee X12 to develop and revise EDI standards that affect the trucking industry.
This EDI business flow chart graphically maps motor carrier business processes with the corresponding EDI transaction sets that are commonly used by TL, LTL and express-package carriers. The VICS EDI Transportation and Distribution Standing Committee, with the support of the American Trucking Associations' EDI Task Group, developed the flow chart.
For more detailed information about EDI transaction sets, ATA's ITLC publishes an implementation guide containing more than 2,000 pages on EDI transaction sets used throughout the supply chain. The guide, updated annually, is available in hard copy or on CD-ROM. (To order, call ATA customer service at (800) 282-5463).
