2009 NAFC Conference

If you missed the 2009 NAFC Management Conference and Exhibition in beautiful Lake Tahoe, here are just a few of the informative and important messages your trucking industry financial, accounting, taxation, and risk management peers heard:

  • Ross Harris of PowerTrack gave an excellent presentation about managing credit and cash in a tight credit market.  Shortening the cash cycle and monitoring certain indices were just two of the techniques that he discussed.
  • Mitch Poole and Matt Ferguson of The Reznick Group discussed the various techniques trucking companies use to be “green” and save money at the same time.
  • Managing one’s tax position in a troubled economy was a timely presentation made by the professionals at Grant Thornton LLP.  Specifically discussed were the tax benefits and pitfalls of ownership change, plus President Obama’s budget proposals and their possible impact on business.
  • Techniques for surviving a customer/supplier bankruptcy were provided by Craig Helmreich and Greg Ostendorf of Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary, P.C.
  • Jeffrey Toole, also of Scopelitis, and Tom Dickmeyer, of the Cline Wood Agency provided a risk management update.  Mr. Toole covered self-insurance in the trucking industry, discussing advantages and disadvantages, as well as FMCSA and state requirements to become self-insured.  Tom Dickmeyer gave an overview of the current insurance market, as well as well as a number of “insider” insurance buying tips.
  • Focusing on a company’s cash and credit position was the theme of a presentation made by Scott Davis of Grant Thornton LLP.  Techniques for maintaining financial flexibility were provided, so carriers can be ready to rebuild business when freight rebounds.  NAFC attendees have information that will give them a leg-up on the competition!

In addition, attendees heard from ATA Economist Bob Costello, ATA Chairman “Shorty” Whittington, and ATA Vice President Bob Pitcher, each with timely updates on the economy, Congressional matters, and state laws.  Plus, all had the opportunity to earn CPE credits and talk with top-notch industry suppliers, consultants and service providers.
