ATA recently honored 57 motor carriers and professionals and 21 State Trucking Associations for their exceptional safety accomplishments at the ATA Safety Management Council’s Safety & Human Resources National Conference, September 18.
Keith Suits, of Rite Aid Rome Distribution Center (NY), enjoyed an extended ovation as he came to the stage to accept the National Driver of the Year honor. Suits was selected, in part, because of the 2 million accident and citation free miles he has amassed during his 20 year career as a professional truck driver and his extraordinary work as an emissary of highway safety to schools and at community events.
The National Safety Director Award, regarded as one of the most prestigious awards offered to a trucking industry safety professional, was given to John Spiros of Roehl Transport, Inc (WI) who impressed the judges with the carrier’s comprehensive safety programs, his ability to manage and inspire safety success, and the over 60 awards received for personal and company safety achievements in his 21 years in trucking safety.
The coveted ATA President’s Trophy, which honors the carriers with the best overall safety programs grouped by total vehicle miles traveled, was awarded to Wal-Mart Transportation, LLC (AR) in the Large Fleet (over 100 million miles) category; A. Duie Pyle, Inc. (PA) in the Mid-Size Fleet (between 25-100 million miles) category; and CVS Transportation, LLC (RI) in the Small Fleet (under 25 million miles) category. Each qualified due to their exemplary performance in the ATA Truck & Industrial Safety Contests and extensive safety programs and training. All were selected for the honor by an independent panel of law enforcement officials.
Other awards presented at the Awards Banquet included the Excellence in Human Resource Management Award presented to Pitt Ohio Express, LLC (PA), the Excellence in Safety Award received by North Carolina Trucking Association, and the SMC Leadership Award given to Michael Baker, CDS, of Usher Transport, Inc. (KY). The Excellence in H.R. Management Award recognized Pitt Ohio Express’ personnel policies, procedures, and programs, as well as training that contributed to the carrier’s ability to hire the best and fully invest in them. Baker received the Leadership Award for his steadfast leadership, wisdom and contributions as the Chairman of the Safety Management Council. North Carolina Trucking Association outshined the competition with its widespread educational offering and safety outreach programs earning it the Excellence in Safety Award for the second year in a row.
