AWARD PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS:
COMPANY AWARDS
Truck & Industrial Safety Contests
The ATA National Truck & Industrial Safety Contests are the only two national safety programs that recognize the extraordinary safety accomplishments of motor carriers across the United States by operation type and size. The contests have been conducted for more than 50 years to recognize the top companies who have the lowest accident frequency and lowest lost work day case rates.
The ATA Truck Safety Contest is divided into specific truck divisions (e.g., truckload, LTL, tank, etc.) and vehicle miles travelled categories. The ATA Industrial contest uses the same divisions and is divided into three categories based on the number of employees.
ATA President's Trophy
The fleets which have won a first, second, or third place award in the ATA National Truck Safety Contest are invited to submit a comprehensive application to be considered for the ATA President's Trophy. From these applications, three companies – one from each of three size categories - are chosen to receive the coveted ATA President’s Trophy which honors the carriers’ superior safety record, outstanding commitment to safety industry-wide, and extensive promotion of safety among all highway users. Excellence in Human Resource Management Award
The Excellence in Human Resource Management Award is the only national, industry-wide award presented to the motor carrier who has led the way in Human Resource innovation and has been successful in managing its workforce through its programs and benefits. The Award honors the trucking industry’s finest – the company that surpassed all others in its ability to hire and retain top-notch drivers; as well as train and inspire professional excellence. INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
National Driver of the Year
The National Driver of the Year Award program is presented annually to one professional truck driver for his/her exemplary accomplishments and excellent driving attributes. The winner is selected from the nominations submitted by each state trucking association. These nominations are often the winners of each state association’s Driver of the Year awards program, which judges a driver’s extraordinary driving record, willingness to assist others on the highway and/or other community service and heroic deeds. The National Driver of the Year Award program recognizes both the driver’s exceptional achievements, safety record and professionalism, as well as provides positive publicity for the driver, the driver’s company, the state association, and the industry. National Safety Director Award
The National Safety Director Award is presented annually to the motor carrier safety executive whose professional qualifications, safety programs and achievements are deemed most outstanding among his or her peers. To be eligible, candidates must have overall authority for policy decisions in the promulgation, inauguration and administration of his/her motor carrier’s safety program as well as full-time responsibility for the execution of such programs. Candidate resumes must demonstrate a candidate’s ability to manage successful safety programs, and exhibit a devotion to his/her career in highway and/or industrial safety. Candidates or the companies must be a member of American Trucking Associations or the ATA Safety Management Council. Nominations are reviewed by the National Safety Director Award Committee and judged by government and law enforcement personnel. Human Resources Professional of the Year Award
The Human Resources Professional of the Year is the only national, industry-wide award presented to the individual who has excelled at managing a motor carrier’s human resource functions, i.e., recruiting, retention, personnel policy development, enforcement, training, and benefits. This individual has introduced and overseen programs with proven success.
Leadership Award
The Safety Management Council’s annual Leadership Award is presented to the individual who has gone above and beyond in supporting and promoting the Council; who has provided constant input to the Executive Director; and who has led the Council membership in advancing SMC programs, membership and outreach.
STATE ASSOCIATION AWARDS
State Association Recognition Awards
The ATA State Association Recognition Program recognizes those state trucking associations affiliated with American Trucking Associations, who effectively foster and promote highway safety programs within their borders for the greater good of the trucking industry and all highway users. States are invited to submit a recognition award nomination each year, and are judged on safety awareness and educational activities, incentive and recognition programs, and more. One state association is honored annually with the "Excellence in Safety" Award. This award is presented to the state association with the most comprehensive safety program among those competing. An awards ceremony is held in conjunction with the ATA SMC’s Safety & Human Resources National Conference & Exhibition.
